Koforidua Local Council of Churches initiates sanitation campaign

Koforidua, May 15, GNA – Koforidua Local Council of Churches (KLCC) have initiated a three-year sanitation campaign to check filth in the city of Koforidua, which now spends over three billion cedis annually on sanitation.

The programme targeting driver union groups, basic schools and market women, is to sensitize residents in Koforidua on the essence of keeping a sanitized environment to maintain a healthy society.

Launching it, Reverend Kwabena Asare Ayeh, Koforidua District Pastor of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana and Chairman of the KLCC, bemoaned the spate of irresponsible littering of the Koforidua streets, describing the situation as not only unacceptable but also sinful.

He said wanton desecration of the environment should be considered a sin as it destroys the ecosystem and make human habitation extremely susceptible to health problems.

Rev. Ayeh said the surge in malaria cases and the occasional outbreak of cholera epidemics and enteric fevers such as typhoid, was as a result of the continual disregard for personal hygiene and environmental wellness.

Rev. Ayeh called for immediate cessation of littering some arterial routes in the Municipality with faecal matter and polythene bags saying, this negative behaviour only “fits dogs” and not human beings. Nana Akwasi Adjei Boateng, New Juaben Municipal Chief Executive welcomed the initiative of the KLCC and pledged the support of the Assembly.
