Driver fined for obstructing president’s convoy

The Berekum Community Tribunal has fined Kwabena Kyere, a Taxi driver, 500,000 cedis for crossing the convoy of President Jerry John Rawlings on November 2 at Berekum.

The accused was said to have ignored signals by the police to stop when the convoy was driving towards Adamsu in the Jaman district in Ashanti. He pleaded guilty to the charge of obstruction and asked the tribunal, chaired by Mr Richard Kogwapwa, to deal leniently with him.

The prosecutor said the police striking force, led by Deputy Superintendent K.Tweneboah, signalled the accused to stop but he ignored it. The police chased, arrested and charged him with the offence.

A similar incident on the Tema motor way on October 29 resulted in a fatal accident in which four of the president’s bodyguards lost their lives.
