15 PEOPLE DIE OF ANTHRAX

Fifteen persons died last week at Nyonbare, near Sekose, in the Bolgatanga District of the Upper East Region of suspected anthrax for consuming the carcasses of dead cattle. Dr. Kingsley Meekey Aryee, the Veterinary Officer in-charge of Bolgatanga District told the Graphic that the report of the outbreak of the cattle disease was received last Sunday.

He said his outfit started vaccination of all cattle in the area last Monday. He said so far, 430 herbs of cattle have been vaccinated against the disease. He said personnel from his department also visited Pelungu and some other villages which considered endemic areas to ascertain whether the disease has resurfaced in those villages.

He said the communities in the area have been advised against eating carcasses of cattle and sheep without first reporting to the Veterinary Services Department.
