Kpone, April 14, GNA – Mr. Joseph Nii Laryea Afotey-Agbo, 41 year-old Member of Parliament for the Kpone/Katamanso Constituency in the Greater Accra Region was on Saturday re-elected as the constituency’s National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for the December elections. Mr Afotey-Agbo won 91 votes out of the 120 votes cast to beat his competitor Mr Komevor Tettegah, 51 year-old Managing Director of the Banking Supervision Department of the Bank of Ghana who got 27 votes; two of the votes were rejected.
Party supporters jubilated amidst drumming and dancing after Mr Michael Boadu, Tema Electoral Officer announced the result of the election. Delivering his acceptance speech, the incumbent thanked the delegates for making the right choice, saying that the party could only maintain the seat when the right candidate was identified and elected to contest the general election. He further stated that he believed that he was given the nod based on his relentless work and loyalty to the constituency during the past three and a half years.
Mr Afotey-Agbo urged NDC faithful to dedicate and commit themselves to winning more supporters and observed that, the battle to maintain the seat as well as continue with the numerous development programmes after the December election has just begun. To the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr Afotey-Agbo cautioned them not to waste their resources in campaigning at the constituency as the seat will forever be for the NDC. Mr Tettegah accepted defeat and promised his support for the party and the incumbent to maintain the seat. In an address, Mr Ellis Aferi, Constituency Chairman warned that immigrants who have settled in the constituency should not be pushed by any party to register when the voter’s register is opened in May. Mr. Aferi therefore urged delegates to avail themselves to be trained as polling agents to prevent rigging of votes in the constituency. Mr Jerry Acquaye Thompson, Greater Accra Regional Organizing Secretary of the NDC gave the assurance that the party would win 25 seats out of the 27 seats in the region. Madam Beatrice Naa Lameley Ashong, Former Kpone-Katamanso MP, Nii Amasah Namoale, La-Dadekotopon MP and Mr Alfred Agbesi, Ashaiman MP called for unity among party members during the elections.
