Civil Society Organization supports independent presidential candidate

Koforidua, April 14, GNA- The People’s Independent Movement (PIM), a civil society organization, that supports individuals seeking to contest presidential elections as independent candidates, said if a presidential candidate that it supports comes to power, the Movement would press for constitutional reforms. The movement maintained that though the 1992 Constitutions stated that political power resided in the people, in reality, the constitution over concentrated political power in the hands of the Executive President, who had direct or indirect influence on all institutions of governance including even bodies that were suppose to monitor its activities.

Nana Addo-Aikins, Interim Spokesman of the organization, announced these at a press conference in Koforidua on Monday. He observed that the current national development programme of the country was just a continuation of the policy of pre-colonial days when people were facing severe economic hardships but were being told to believe that the economy had improved. Nana Addo-Aikins advocated concentration of power in the hands of the people and make them main players in the political and economic transformation of the country instead of the situation where politics was gradually becoming the preserve for the rich. He announced that, the movement had endorsed Mr John Alex Hamah, 71, public and industrial relations consultant, as an independent presidential candidate for the 2008 Election.
