Australian HC takes part in Ga Mashie clean-up exercise

Accra, April 5, GNA – Mr. William Williams, Australian High Commissioner to Ghana on Saturday participated in a beach front clean-up exercise in Ga Mashie aimed at riding the area of filth. The beachfront clean-up campaign at Ga Mashie was a collaborative programme between the Australia High Commission, Old Accra Conservation Development Association (OACDA and the Ashiedu-Keteke Sub-Metro and United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Mr Williams said the clean-up campaign launched in Australia some decades ago has over 35 million members in 100 countries that were tasked to ensure global cleanness and healthy environment.

He said the Commission was therefore sponsoring the exercise with about GHC20, 000 in the provision of logistics to ensure successful implementation of the clean-up strategy in Ghana.

Mr Williams said the initiative would be sustained and lauded the commitment of the youth to rid the beach lines of Ga Mashie of filth. The clean-up campaign was a follow-up to the execution of the first phase of the rehabilitation of Ussher Fort and the provision of other social amenities in the area.

Nii Teiko Tagoe, Director of the Ga Mashie development Agency who also took part in the exercise called on the inhabitants to always maintain a clean environment to curb the disease burden of the area. He said Ga Mashie would soon receive a major facelift with the support of donor agencies and called on the citizenry to be on board. 5 April 08
