95% of population in Amansie West has potable water

Dome (Ash), Oct 6, GNA – The government has since 2001 sunk about 175 boreholes and provided pipe-borne water and other water systems to make water available to about 95 per cent of the people in Amansie West district.

Mr Ben Kwakye-Adeefe, the District Chief Executive, who made this known, said the provision of the water formed part of government’s intervention to provide water and electricity to the district considered as one of the most deprived in Ashanti.

He said the Community Water and Sanitation Agency and the HIPC Fund are implementing the water and sanitation component of the project with some intervention from the Otumfuo Education and Health Fund and Resolute Amansie Limited, a gold mining company.

The electrification component is being implemented with aid from Japan through the Japan International Co-operation Agency (JICA). Mr Kwakye-Adeefe, who conducted the press round some of the water facilities on Tuesday, later inaugurated a water project at Dome to symbolise the completion of all the water projects in the district.

Under the electrification project, he said, about 35 communities including Manso-Atwere, Abore, Adubia, Agroyesum, Ahwerewa, Esaase, Omanadware and Antoakrom have already been provided with electricity, hile work was progressing on providing 25 other communities with power. The DCE said the completion of both the water and electrification project will help to reduce the high incidence of water-borne diseases in the district and also enhance the setting up of rural industries to move the area forward.

Nana Yaw Mensah, chief of Dome, pledged that the water and sanitation committee of the town will manage the project properly to enable it to have longer life span.
