9 Kids Graduate from GCAO Summer Reading Club in Toronto

John Milton, an English writer said, “Reading maketh a man.” How true! Reading is very important to every child’s educational development. It is also said that the devil finds work for the idle hands to do.

It is in the light of the above that Homework Club of the Ghanaian Canadian Association of Ontario (GCAO) decided to organize a Reading Club for some Ghanaian kids in Toronto during the summer holidays (school break). The Reading summer school was under the principalship of Mr. Eyiah, a seasoned teacher and two youth volunteers-Vivian and Sandra Ofori. The program focused on the book-THE FLIP written by a Ghanaian youth who is also a motivational speaker based in Toronto, Francis Atta. The participants delved into the life story of the author as told in the book. They were greatly inspired by change (u-turn) in the behaviour of the main character which was for the better. They engaged in challenging but diverse exercises based on the book which included developing questions for the author and writing a reflection on the book.

It therefore became more real and interesting as on the day of their graduation which was on July 31, 2016 the author, Francis Atta made himself available at the premises of the Apostles Continuation Church to answer awesome questions from the kids and listened to them as they enthusiastically recited his poem on HARD WORK! Each kid was presented with a certificate of participation by the GCAO for his/her hard work.

The occasion was graced by the presence of parents of participants and some executives of GCAO including Messers Emmanuel Duodu, Larry Kutuadu, Rita and Lucy Crenstil.
