Kumasi, May 19, GNA – Seventy-seven persons perished while about 120 sustained various degrees of injury through road accidents between April and the middle of May, this year at various locations in the Ashanti Region.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Joseph Antwi-Ababio, Deputy Ashanti Regional Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU), who disclosed this, called for a multi-sectoral approach to ensuring safety on the roads so as to reduce the increasing spate of accidents in the Region.
He was speaking to the Ghana News Agency in an interview in Kumasi on Friday.
ASP Antwi-Ababio bemoaned the impunity with which some drivers flouted motor traffic regulations and said this attitude called for vigilance not only by the police but also the citizenry to flush out “those undisciplined drivers”.
He cautioned vehicle owners to strive to scrutinize the identity of drivers they employed “since most people who posed as drivers were either quacks or half-baked”.
“Vehicle owners should at all times liaise with the Driver Vehicle and Licensing Authority (DVLA) as well as the MTTU to establish the genuineness of drivers they employed”, ASP Antwi-Ababio noted. They should also be committed to maintaining their vehicles to ensure their roadworthiness.
ASP Antwi-Ababio gave the assurance that his outfit was stepping up efforts to enforce motor traffic regulations to the letter for the avoidance of accidents, which were becoming rampant in the Region.
