74 year old ex-army corporal granted bail on abortion.

Juaso (Ash), April 21, GNA — A 74-year old ex-army lance Corporal, who was initially remanded in custody for two weeks has now been granted 10 million cedis bail with a surety on a charge of attempted abortion by the Juaso circuit court.

Mathew Kwame Biney, who has pleaded not guilty will reappear within the next two weeks.

Prosecuting, Chief Inspector Francis Kwasi Ofori, prosecuting told the court, presided over by Mr Jacob Boon that on April 6, 2004, at about 4:20 pm, the Medical Director of Juaso district hospital reported to the police that an 18-year old student who bleeding had been rushed to the hospital.

When the girl, who was on admission was interrogated, she mentioned the name of Biney who used some herb to abort her pregnancy. Chief Inspector Ofori said police proceeded to Obogu and arrested Biney, adding that when his room was searched, a quantity of injection syringes, empty bottles of procaine penicillin and injection needles were found which indicated that the accused was practising medicine without authority.

He said investigations revealed that the victim a first year student in Senior Secondary School was two months pregnant. Biney, an ex-lance corporal of the Ghana Army was discharged in 1965, as a nurse of the 37 Military Hospital.
