Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has announced that Ghana’s National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) has recorded a substantial boost in enrolment and system reliability, with over 670,000 additional citizens registered in the past year.
Delivering an update on the health sector’s performance on Friday, July 18, the Minister noted that total enrolment had risen from 15 million in 2024 to 15.67 million by mid-2025—an encouraging sign of growing public trust in the scheme.
He described the increase as evidence that recent government interventions in the health insurance sector are yielding results.
He attributed the rise in enrolment to stronger financing mechanisms, prompt claims payments, and structural reforms that have improved service delivery.
Akandoh underscored that these disbursements demonstrate the government’s commitment to enhancing the scheme’s functionality and building a more inclusive health insurance system.
Mintah Akandoh responds to Akosua Otchere’s question on whether he’s fit for the role. “I’m not the first Health Minister without a medical background. In fact, the person widely regarded as Ghana’s best Health Minister wasn’t a doctor either. Plus, I’ve served as Ranking Member on the Health Committee for 7 years.”
He added that “I am pleased to announce that nursing trainee allowances have been duly paid.”
However, Mintah Akandoh said government has released funding to every District Assembly to support the construction of at least two CHPS compounds.”
