Techiman (B/A), Aug. 18, GNA – A 60-member farmers association has been formed at Asoatwene, a suburb of Techiman in the Brong-Ahafo Region with the objective of farming alongside the River Tano basin, so as to maintain the ecology of the area.
Mr Henry Korang-Fosu, Techiman Municipal Coordinator of the Friends of Trees and River Bodies Society told Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Techiman on Tuesday that, the members of the association have planted a number of tree species at the bank of the river Tano.
They included mahogany, emire, acacia and cedella. Mr Korang-Fosu commended the Adventist Development Relief Agency (ADRA) for periodically providing the members with some food aid in support of their activities and said such assistance has really relieved them of some financial obligations.
He complained that the major problem facing the association was how stray animals destroy the trees planted in the area and therefore, called on the authorities of the Municipal Assembly to assist them in solving the problem, while encouraging them in their contribution towards the protection of the environment.
