The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Professor Ernest Aryeetey has waded into the controversial debate on the duration of Senior High School Education in Ghana.
According to him, students admitted into the University after completing the four-year education cycle in SHS performed far better than those who were educated under the three-year system.
There have been arguments whether or not government should reintroduce the four-year academic period for Senior High Schools which was first introduced under the erstwhile Kufuor administration.
However, the NDC government has resolved to maintain the three-year period despite several calls by some educationists in the country.
National performance trends from 2006 to 2015 indicated that the four-year students performed better while examination malpractice reduced during the period.
Speaking on Starr Chat Wednesday with host Bola Ray on Starr 103.5FM Prof. Aryeetey said students who stayed longer in senior high school have so far performed better in university.
“I think I have gathered from my colleagues and others that the longer students have stayed in school the better they are for the university.”
Prof. Aryeetey added that “students who came to my university with four-year background did better than those who came with three years.”
