4 Landguards grabbed at Amasaman

The Amasaman police have apprehended four people believed to be notorious land guards who had been terrorizing residents and landowners of the area.

They are Ezekiel Siaw, 34-year-old filling station attendant; Samuel Odame, 28, driver; Frank Amponsah, 33 and Samuel Divia, 22.

Items found on them included a pump action gun with 17 rounds of live ammunition, eight empty shells, 9mm pistol with six rounds of live ammunition, two empty cartridges, a pinch bar, machetes and an axe.

The four were apprehended at Danchira and Ashalaja, near Amasaman on Tuesday, September 29, this year.

Briefing the media, DCOP Christian Tetteh Yohuno, the Accra Regional Police Commander, said his men apprehended three of the suspects earlier riding in a Nissan 4×4 Extera after they had invaded Katapor, a village near Amasaman and were firing guns indiscriminately.

Their action, according to the police officer, was to prevent any form of aggression by the local people after an earlier confrontation over a parcel of land.

The fourth suspect, Samuel Divia, was grabbed with four of the cartridges escaping to Ashalaja upon hearing of the arrest of his accomplices.

Police investigations later revealed that during the day, the same suspects armed themselves with the weapons and paraded themselves as landguards, terrorizing residents; and in the night, they used the same weapons to perpetrate all sorts of criminal activities, including robbery.

The investigations revealed that the attacks were carried out on residents of Pokuase, Amasaman, Katapor and its environs.

They would be sent to court soon for prosecution.
