325 million cedis paid as premium for NHIS in Tano South District

Bechem (B/A) Aug. 31, GNA – Eleven thousand, six hundred people have registered for the Tano South District Health Insurance Scheme and paid 325 million cedis in premiums.

Mr. Mike Takyi Agyemang, district Scheme Manager, who announced this at the launching of the Scheme at Bechem on Tuesday said 80 per cent of the registered members had been issued with photo Identity Cards.

He said the registration exercise was not encouraging compared to the district’s population of 70,000 and urged the people to join the scheme for quality health care delivery. The NHIS is expected to be implemented in September this year

Mr. Osei Sekyere Bota, District Chief Executive, said the Government provided 100 million cedis in 2003 to support the Scheme. He said the Assembly in 2004 released 85 million cedis towards the implementation of the scheme and had also earmarked 100 million cedis from its share of the Common Fund to support the scheme this year.

The National Health Insurance Council has also released 56 million cedis from the HIPC Administrative work in June this year towards the Scheme in the district.

Mr. Bota advised the people to register with the scheme and Appealed to the Community Health Insurance Committee to ensure an effective implementation of the scheme.
