Accra – Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings, President of the 31st December Women’s Movement, today called for the abolition of obnoxious customs that are not in the interest of women. Nana Konadu mentioned widowhood rites which, she said, are against the rights of women and should be abolished . Some portions of the intestate succession law should also be amended to safeguard women’s interest. She urged the National Council on Women and Development, (NCWD) to take the necessary steps to get those obnoxious laws and practices abolished. Nana Konadu was addressing a rally organized at Madina near Accra to launch the 15th anniversary of the 31st December Women’s Movement on the theme “Empowerment of Women, a conditionality for Development”. Activities planned for the celebration include tree planting, clean-up exercises, fun games, symposiums, radio discussions and a Church service. The Movement will encourage more women to enter Parliament to protect and advance women’s interest. She expressed concern about the poor environment in Accra and asked them to keep their surroundings clean.
