30 die in fatal motor accident in northern Ghana

A fatal road accident killed at least 30 passengers and injured 80 others Saturday evening, when a passenger truck fell in a gutter at Zagyuri, a town about 700 kilometers north of Accra, local radio reported.

Eyewitnesses said that the accident occurred as a result of wrongful overtaking by the driver of the passenger truck Saturday evening.

The bodies of the 30 deceased passengers had been deposited for autopsy at a hospital in Tamale, capital of the North Region 658 kilometers north of here, while the injured were reportedly receiving treatment at the same hospital.

According to media reports, the death toll could increase as a result of the unavailability of doctors at the hospital. The injured and the deceased were brought to the hospital by residents of the area.
