A delegation of 28 police officers consisting of five officers, one chief inspector, three inspectors and 19 others in different ranks left Accra on Monday, February 17, 2014 for Italy, where they are scheduled to undergo one month of intensive professional training.
The training is expected to prepare the officers for United Nations peacekeeping deployment duties.
Participants were strategically selected, a senior officer told TV3.
Some of them are instructors, some are going as unit commanders, and some are going as platoon and section commanders, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Samuel Ackom, Deputy Commander of the Formed Police Unit (FPU), told TV3.
When they come back to Ghana, they can train their other colleagues, he added.
Among the programmes the trainees will be taken through are Public Order Management, Tactics Progression and Policing Techniques.
“Policing is all about training; about the experience; about having the skills as far as what you do is concerned to bring you up to speed on world best practices,” DSP Cephas Arthur told TV3 at the Kotoka International Airport prior to the departure of the officers.
“So the officers are going to imbibe a lot about policing,” the Head of the Public Affairs Directorate of the Ghana Police Service stressed.
Present to see off the team – made up of 21 males and seven females – was the Commander of FPU, Chief Superintendent Hamza Yakubu.
