27-year-old Chop Bar hand Remanded for Stealing

Cape Coast, June 22, GNA – An accused person who appeared before a Magistrate Court in Cape Coast on Monday, on the charges of stealing, unlawful entry and causing damage vehemently implored the court to temper justice with mercy as he had regretted his actions.

Michael Amegayibor, 27, after pleading guilty, assigned serious financial constraints as the reason for his action and promised the presiding judge, Mr. Narh Awuah that he would go back to his fufu pounding job to make money and repair the damaged house.

The court, however, remanded him in police custody and deferred sentence until Monday, July 4, 2011.

Prosecuting, Sergeant Charles Effah told the court that Amegayibor is a trained mason who resides at Abura near Cape Coast and doubles as a fufu pounder at a chop bar in Abura.

He said on Friday, July 10, this year, at about 08.30 hours the complainant Nii Aryee Hammond, a store keeper, and his brother Albert Hammond who lived together at Tibu-Darko also a suburb of Cape Coast, visited the complainant’s building site at Abura and detected that somebody had broken a portion of the newly constructed house and had made away with two bags of cement and a wheelbarrow.

Sergeant Effah said the complainant then alerted the people around to be on the look out for any person with such items. A few hours later the complainant had information of a young man who had been apprehended by a volunteer group with the stolen items.

He rushed to the scene and together with the group sent the accused to the Police Station where he admitted the offense and told the police that he used a rock to break a portion of the building in order to gain access.
