25,000 People Displaced By Floods In The North – NADMO

The Northern Regional Coordinator of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), Alhaji Mahama Abdulai Silimboma, says over 238 communities have been affected by the recent flooding in the Northern region.

Speaking on Citi News, Alhaji Silimboma said about 25,536 people have been displaced by the floods and rendered homeless in the region. He said several farmlands, homes, bridges and properties have been destroyed, and this is making life very difficult.

According to him, the number of affected communities and people is increasing by the day, making it difficult for NADMO to decide on the actual number of facilities to take to their aid.

He said some of the communities have reverted to the use of classrooms as their place of refuge thus preventing school children from attending classes. NADMO is however going to supply them with tents so that they can pack out of the classrooms and make them available for classes, as basic schools resumes today.

Alhaji Silimboma said the extent of destruction is beyond the capacity of NADMO so they are calling on other NGO’s, benevolent organizations and sympathizers to come to the aid of the people in the North. He also called for the redesigning of traditional homes, especially in the northern parts of the country, where most of the houses are prone to destruction because of floods.
