Ghana’s Black Queens claimed bronze at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations after a tense 4-3 penalty shootout victory over defending champions South Africa, following a 1-1 draw in regulation time.
The two sides, who previously met in the group stages, battled fiercely once again at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca in Friday’s third-place playoff. South Africa struck first in the opening half, only for the Black Queens of Ghana to draw level after the break, forcing the match into penalties after 90 minutes.
With both teams showing nerves of steel, it was Ghana who ultimately held theirs better, converting four of their five kicks, while South Africa missed two crucial spot-kicks, handing the Black Queens a well-deserved podium finish.

The win marks Ghana’s best finish at WAFCON since 2006 and caps off a remarkable campaign for head coach Kim Lars Björkegren, whose side had narrowly missed out on a place in the final after a heartbreaking shootout defeat to host nation Morocco in the semi-finals.
The result brings fresh hope to a nation hungry for a return to dominance in women’s football and a fitting end to what has been a spirited and inspiring run by the Black Queens in Morocco.
The final between Morocco and Nigeria will take place on Saturday in Rabat.
