202 Women contesting assembly polls in Ashanti

Two hundred and two (202) women have put themselves up for election to the 30 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies in the Ashanti Region.

Mr. Paul Boateng, the Regional Director of the Electoral Commission (EC), who made this known to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Kumasi, said in all, 3, 578 candidates are contesting the election, which would be held across the entire nation on Tuesday, September 1.

He gave the assurance that the Commission was ready for the polls, adding that, adequate preparations had been made.

They had taken officers, who were going to be involved in the conduct of the polls through thorough training to prevent mistakes that could undermine its credibility.

He said all the necessary materials – ballot papers, biometric verification machines and indelible ink were all also ready, and that, they were arranging to get these dispatched.

Mr. Boateng asked election officials to be diligent, vigilant and ensure that the right things were done.

He called for cooperation and support of everybody, pointing out that, all had a part to play to make the assembly and unit committee elections fair and transparent.
