2010 Census took off smoothly in Tema

Tema, Sept. 27, GNA – The 2010 Population and Housing Census last night took off smoothly in the Tema Metropolis, Mr Ken Yirenkyi, Metropolitan Statistical Officer said on Monday. In an interview with the Ghana News Agency, he said the nationwide exercise began on Sunday night at 10:00pm in the metropolis with the enumeration of the homeless, outdoor sleepers, those in hospitals, hotels and guests houses.

He lauded the Ghana National Fire Service for sounding their siren to remind the general public of the census night. The Metro Statistical Officer, however, stated that the challenges his outfit was currently facing included delays in receiving logistics from the head office while some enumeration areas were too large for one person to handle.

He explained that he was using standby enumerators to help solve the problem and gave the assurance that everybody who spent the census night in Ghana, including day old babies, would be covered. Mr Yirenkyi appealed to the general public to co-operate with the enumerators to ensure a successful census. He assured the public that any information taken from them would be treated as confidential and would not be used for tax purposes as being alleged by a section of the public.
