Accra, Dec. 1, GNA – The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has released the provisional results for the 2005 Senior Secondary School Certificate Examinations (SSSCE). However, the results of 3,475 candidates have been withheld pending the conclusion of investigations into various irregularities, a statement signed by Mrs Agnes Teye-Cudjoe, Senior Public Affairs Officer at WAEC said.
The statement said the withheld results included the entire results of five schools.
The results have been dispatched to schools and candidates are advised to contact their various schools and not the offices of WAEC for their results. Candidates could also access their results on line. The statement said 534 schools registered for the exams with a total of 112,229 candidates.
Seven hundred and thirty-three candidates had their subjects results cancelled as a result of involvement in various examination irregularities such as bringing foreign materials into the exams hall and collusion.
The statement said, even though, it was a school examination, 23 cases of impersonation were recorded and the affected students had their entire results cancelled and had been barred from taking any examination conducted by the Council for two years. On performance, a total of 49,140 candidates, representing 44 per cent passed in seven or more subjects; 16,429 or 15 per cent passed in six subjects, 13,316 or 12 per cent passed in five subjects while 11,084 or 10 per cent passed in four subjects. Other passes are 8,168 candidates representing seven per cent in three subjects; 6,394 or six per cent in two subjects and 4,881 candidates or four per cent in one subject. It said 2,305 candidates or two per cent failed in all subjects while 488 candidates were absent.
The statement noted that the 2005 SSSCE for school candidates recorded an increase in irregularity cases and mass cheating at some centres mainly due to poor supervision and invigilation.
