20-year-old man jailed for stealing

Techiman (B/A), Jan.10 GNA- A Circuit Court in Techiman, has sentenced a 20-year-old labourer to 12 months imprisonment, in hard labour for stealing a sheep at the Techiman Zabon-Zongo community. Kwame Wiafe pleaded guilty to stealing.

Prosecuting, Chief Inspector Sampson Y. Jebuni told the court presided over by Mr Justice Erasmus Gyinae, a High Court Judge sitting as an additional Circuit Court Judge in Techiman, that on December 29, 2004, members of a Community Watchdog Committee, arrested the accused who was offering a sheep valued at 200,000 cedis for half the price.

He said when Wiafe was challenged he confessed that he stole the sheep from his father’s pen at Manso but failed to lead the police to the town to ascertain the truth.

Passing sentence, Mr Justice Gyinae noted that the accused person could have used channelled his energy into a productive venture. He ordered that the sheep should be sold and the proceeds paid into government chest.
