Nineteen students, three of them pregnant, failed to write the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) at five centres in the Kumasi metropolis.
The centres are Yaa Asantewaa Senior High School (SHS), Asanteman SHS, Kumasi Wesley Girls’ SHS, WESCO Demonstration Junior High School (JHS), Tanoso Anglican JHS and Angel Educational Complex.
This came to light during a visit to the centres by the metropolitan director of education, Alexander Atta-Asante.
He was accompanied by members of the education sub-committee of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA).
A total of 22,840 candidates, made up of 10,988 males and 11,852 females, registered to write this year’s examination at the 89 centres across the city.
Some of the absentee candidates were reported to have travelled outside the country.
Mr. Atta-Asante expressed satisfaction with the comportment of both the candidates and the invigilators.
Earlier, Osei Assibey-Antwi, Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), reminded the candidates to adhere strictly to the examination rules and regulations and said it was in their own interest to resist any temptation to cheat.
He inspired them to have self-confidence and refuse to give in to fear.
The MCE said he wished the candidates well and urged the supervisors and the invigilators to efficiently discharge their duties to ensure the success of the examination.
