17 NGOs To Refund ?250m

A total of 17 Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and Community Based Organisations (CBOs) have been ordered by the Ghana AIDS Commission to refund monies totaling ?250 million they collected from the Commission for HIV/AIDS Awareness campaigns.

They have been given up to next week to refund the monies or face prosecution. The order by the Commission followed a discovery that they failed to use the funds for the purposes for which they were solicited.

The Director of the Ghana AIDS Commission, Prof Sakyi Awuku Amoa disclosed this in an interview with the ‘Times’ in Accra.

Prof Amoa said the Commission upon detecting that the organizations had done nothing, had discussions with them and gave them ample time to refund the monies. Unfortunately, he said only three organizations had refunded a total of ?25 million.

On the whole, Prof Amoa commended the over 2,500 NGOs who had partnered it in the fight against the AIDS scourge.
