15 Remanded for Lack of Communal Spirit

The presiding Judge at the Fiapre Circuit Court in the Sunyani Municipality, His Hon. J.K. Gyamfi, has warned that he would not spare any one brought before him for acts of laziness.

He added that the nation needs patriotic and committed citizens to develop and called on members of the public to carry out their responsibilities.

The judge gave the warning when he remanded 15 people in to police custody for refusing to take part in communal labour.

Two others who pleaded guilty to the offence have be fined an amount of 200,000 or in default go to jail for one month.

Presenting the facts of the case, prosecuting chief inspector Agbenyegah gave the names of the accused were given as Kwame Krah, Kwabena Krah, Kwesi Vuta, yaw Mends, Mensah Sonyiri, Akwatia Menu, Atanga Grushie, Atoa Alhassan, Kwabena Kyeremeh, Zee Kobas, Kwame Poku, Kwesi Mensah, Kato Achamfour, Lawrence Sreso, and Joto Tikor.

The prosecutor explained that all of the accused are residents of Nkwadum in the Brong Ahafo region.

He said on 21 June, 2005, the Opinion Leader of the Area organised a weeding exercise to rid the town of over grown weeds.

The accused, who did not have any good reason refused to participate and when they were called for explanation they refused to attend the meeting as well.

The case was then brought before court for action to be taken against them.

The case has since been adjourned to 10August 2005.
