15-member SPGE committee inaugurated in Awutu-Senya District

Kasoa (C/R) April, 30, GNA – The government intends to review the National Youth Employment Programme (NYEP) to make it more relevant to the needs of beneficiaries. The Central Regional Minister, Mrs Ama Benyiwa Doe, said this in an address read on her behalf at the inauguration of the Awutu-Senya District Sub-committee on Production and Gainful Employment (SPGE) at Kasoa.

The SPGE is to identify the local economic development potentials, draw strategies to realize the potentials in the district and also work towards mainstreaming all the activities of the informal sector in the District Development Plan.

The Regional Minister said the government appreciates the fact that one of the means to tackle poverty is to reduce unemployment. She said the NYEP would be strengthened so that it could become an effective tool in addressing unemployment in the country. Mrs Benyiwa Doe said the only way poverty could be reduced is to assist the informal sector to access funds to improve their business. The District Coordinating Director, Mr Edward Gbinnye, said the district being among the newly created districts, has many challenges including lack of offices and residential accommodation for workers and staff of the assembly.

He expressed the hope that with the sub-committee now in place it would bring together the various societies and groups in the district involved in production.
