135 tricycle riders arrested for traffic offences in Kumasi

The Police in the Ashanti Region on Tuesday impounded 135 tricycles and arrested their riders for violating various road traffic laws within the Kumasi metropolis.

According to officials of the Motor Transport and Traffic Directorate (MTTD), the move is to instill sanity on the road by ensuring all road users comply with traffic rules and regulations. The riders were arrested for not wearing helmet, jumping red light, using unregistered tricycles and engaging in unauthorized commercial activities.

Regional MTTD Commander, Superintendent Frank Abrokwah, explained tricycles are registered as motorbikes which renders them illegal for use for commercial services.

“Tricycles are registered just like motorbikes so they are not suppose to carry fee paying passengers and also commercial activities”.

He said motor riders must go to DVLA to secure a license for commercial purposes. Superintendent Abrokwah noted that MTTD will strictly enforce the laws governing traffic regulations to bring sanity on the roads. All the 135 riders arrested have been processed for court.
