A total of 133 people were killed in road crashes in the Ashanti Region during the first half of the year, Mr Samuel Obeng Asiamah, the Regional Manager of the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC), has announced.
He said many others also suffered broken bones and cuts and described the trend as quite disheartening.
The recklessness and complete disregard for road traffic regulations, he indicated, could not continue and should stop.
Mr. Asiamah, who spoke to Ghana News Agency (GNA) at the Aprade Junction, where the joint taskforce of Commission, the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) and the Police Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) had mounted an exercise to get drivers to comply with the law.
They were there to check speeding, driving license, road worthy certificate and the wearing of seat belt.
He underlined the resolve of the taskforce to make sure that there was rigid enforcement of the traffic regulations – to get people to do the right things to make the roads safe for everybody.
Mr. Asiamah cautioned against riding in the bucket of pick-ups and trucks and said it was risky and unsafe.
He asked that the people took responsibility for their own safety.
He hinted that the Commission was combining law enforcement with public education on road safety.
It had already distributed road safety textbooks to primary and junior high schools across the region to create the needed awareness among the young ones.
