116 candidates filed nomination to contest election in ER

Koforidua, Oct. 26, GNA – One hundred and sixteen candidates, including eight women and 14 Independents, filed their nomination papers in the Eastern Region to contest the Parliamentary Elections on December 7.

A release from the Eastern Regional Electoral Commission (EC) on Monday said the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) filed candidates in all the 28 constituencies; Convention People’s Party (CPP) 19, People’s National Convention (PNC) 13, EGLE 10 and the Great Consolidated Popular Party (GCPP) one.

Among the independent candidates, Upper West Akim and Asuogyaman Constituencies had two each.

Upper West Akim has seven candidates; followed by Asuogyaman and Lower Manya with six, while eight constituencies have five candidates each.

Meanwhile, the Member of Parliament for Akwapim South (now Nsawam/Aburi), Mr Seth Wiafe-Dankwa has filed suits at a Koforidua High Court seeking an interim injunction against the NPP for disqualifying him from seeking nomination as its parliamentary candidate and contempt of court against the EC.

Speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency at Aburi on Saturday, he explained that the suit against the NPP was due to its decision to organize another primary to elect one Mr Opare Asamoah as its candidate on October 16, even though, he had already been selected by 104 of the Party’s Polling Stations Executives on October 9. Mr Wiafe-Dankwa, who had also filed his nominations as NPP candidate with the EC at Nsawam alongside Mr Asamoah, said he sued the EC for accepting the nomination papers of Mr Asamoah, after he had served it with a writ of mandamus to accept his nomination on the NPP’s ticket.
