113,405 people issued with voters’ ID cards in Ashanti

Kumasi, June 02, GNA – A total of 113,405 people in the Ashanti Region were issued with Voters’ Identity Cards during the 10-day registration of voters’ exercise organized by the Electoral Commission (EC) in May.

Mr Kofi Asomaning, the Ashanti Regional Director of the EC, said 110,000 of them were people who went through the fresh registration in the current limited exercise.

The remaining 2,198 were those who registered during the 2004 exercise but did not complete the process during the exercise. Speaking to the Ghana News Agency in an interview in Kumasi, Mr Asomaning said the exercise was a constitutional requirement for the EC to ensure that every qualified person’s name was on the register. He said the exercise was a limited one but it was fair in all aspects because it gave those who turned 18 by last month the opportunity to do so.
