108 communities get potable water

Aveyime (V/R), June 23, GNA -In line with government agenda of eradicating poverty, especially among rural people, 108 communities and institutions within North Tongu, Dangme West and East were provided with a conventional treatment plant system that supplies potable drinking water.

The project estimated at eleven million dollars would serve the water demand of the areas involved for a ten-year period. Mr Innocent Zanyrah, Project Engineer said the hydro-geological conditions of the areas could not allow for drilling of boreholes hence the need for a community-managed pipe scheme which allowed the extraction of water from the Volta Lake. He said programmes and strategies of the Community Water and Sanitation Agency, were carried out in collaboration with beneficiary communities to enhance sustainability.

The project co-funded by DANIDA, DFID and the Government of Ghana would also satisfy the WHO standards on potable water provision, ensure quality, quantity and reliability. Mr Zanyrah said the project was given to private operators through competitive binding while community management team had been set up to ensure proper management. Mr Boniface Saddique Abubakur, Minister of Water Resources, Works and Housing noted that water and sanitation were key indicators in poverty reduction and urged the communities to take good care of the facilities.

He said government was committed in raising the living standards of Ghanaians and added that constant monitoring of the facilities would be carried out to ensure that it served the needed purpose. Mr Alfred Abayateye, Member of Parliament, Sege Constituency called on the management team to properly manage the proceeds to ensure the replication of the project in other communities.
