10 senior citizens honoured in East Gonja District

Ten (10) retirees in the East Gonja District of the Northern Region were on Saturday July 1, 2017 honoured by the District Assembly in recognition of their contributions to the development of the area.

The honour was in commemoration of the 57th Republic Day Celebration.

Mohammed Tamimu, District Chief Executive (DCE) congratulated the senior citizens for their faithful service to the district and the nation at large and called on them to continue to impact their rich experience towards making informed decisions for the development of the district

He assured residents of the commitment of the Assembly to develop the tourist sites in the district.

Mr Tamimu lamented on the deplorable state of the historic slave market and baths in Salaga and feels it was time to revive them to attract tourist across the globe to boost the revenue generation of the Assembly to be able to execute more projects.

“Salaga is placed high on the map because of the role she played in the Trans-Atlantic slave trade as a central market place for the slave trade and for that matter we need to develop the place to attract people from the Diaspora to come and see the chains and other historic things used during the period”.
